This article shows a lot of incite into our society in America. We have put a lot of emphasis on material things and riches. Money itself isn’t evil it is the love of money. We have also not put God first in our lives and have tried to rely on the government and the economy to bring us through. It is pretty clear how that is working out. It is remarkable to me, a somewhat recently born again Christian, on how many people who claim to believe in Christ don’t take the word of God as being the truth and how humanity really hasn’t changed for all these thousands of years.

Trusting in God comes from knowing who God really is. Unfortunately, most people really don’t know God. People trust in the “God” they made up, not the God that is in the bible. Since people aren’t perfect and don’t know what God wants of them via the bible, people fail to truly trust God. Trusting in God is the same as believing Him. For example, I am a Christian who observes Passover (it occurs on the 14th day of the first month of the lunar calendar) because Jesus did. By partaking of Passover, God promises to get rid of other gods (or idols), have death pass over me, (Ex 12), forgive sins (Matt 26:17) and raise us up to eternal life at the last day (John 6:53).

I trust in God to protect me because He said if I am obedient to His Word, I will have His protection. That is trust. I trust that God makes me holy because He said he would if I keep the Sabbath (Saturday) as a day a worship (Ex 31:13). This is trust. Trust as you describe in your article is only God supplying your needs. It is believing that He will deliver on what he promised if you do as He says. Like I said earlier, most people don’t know what God wants as stated in the bible. They are only believing in some force they really don’ know. How can you completely trust in God then?

The last paragraph of the article was much more uplifting than the previous entirety of the article. I needed the good news before I got the sad news and biblical references. I would also like to read much more about New Testament references than Old Testament as I truly believe Jesus intended our world to be a New Testament world and not an Old Testament world. I understand that the use of the Old Testament is for storytelling purposes only, but I would still prefer to have exposure to Jesus' particular attitude, if any, on these subjects.

It is amazing to think that we commit idolatry every day and yet God still loves us. We can even commit idolatry as we worship God in church. We can worship the man of God as he preaches the word. We can love our Pastor more than God. Look at him for all our answers and contact him for all our problems and not seek God's face or hear his words.

We can commit idolatry by worshiping our worship team. We can think that they are the best. Only our music can enter us into the presence of God. If others don't play, sing and perform the same songs we do that they can not be as "spiritual" as us.

We can also commit idolatry by thinking God can only be the way we want him to be. That he can't still speak to people, that he can't still perform the miracles the way he once had done. We put God into OUR little box and can't let him out. We are actually creating an "image" of who God is and that is idolatry.

The story above impressed me because Israel thought they were doing the proper thing when they brought in the arc of the covenant. As I was reading, I have to admit.. I thought they were doing the right thing as well. Then..WHAM.. the twist of the text! they were slaughtered even with the arc in their camp. We must really be in tune with God because when he drives a lesson home he tends to do it with grave consequences. Thank God he sent Jesus as our intercessor and shows us grace!

I liked this article, it reminds us to stay focused on the Lord, no matter what the present circumstances. It points out the fact that there have been trying times in the past. Reminding us of what can happen when we put our trust in someone or something other than the Lord. It is so easy to get side-tracked from what is really important.

I have enjoyed this article because it focuses on passages I do not often think about, and because there is great insight into human character: Considering our responses to things not going our way is a great way to take a look at who and what we are actually trusting. There is also great insight into the tendencies many of us have to trust Godly things, or religious things, rather than trusting the Lord – it is a subtle, but important difference. I am very reminded of one of my favorite theologians, Schleiermacher, who wrote often about depending on God as the core of faith.

The only trouble I have with the article is that I don’t quite understand what to do with myself when I see that I am mis-placing my trust. Somehow just giving my Self orders, “Self! You need to trust the Lord!” or accusing my Self, “Self you’re being idolatrous!” doesn’t take me to that trusting, reliant place.
