Hi Caroline,

Thanks.

Dr. Bullinger's comment on the line as used in Habakuk gave his reasoning for why "the just shall live by faith" had to be talking about eternal life, not just being alive now (at that time). This is consistant with what I was endeavoring to communicate in my article when I said the line "refers not to what the just (or righteous) will do with their lives (for which there is no guarantee), but rather to how it is that they have life (salvation) rather than death." The "salvation" referred to in Romans 1:16 is among other things, a matter of having eternal life. The point I was endeavoring to make was that "the just shall live by faith" in Romans 1:17 is not talking about the just being victorious in their economic endeavors, or whatever, by means of their beliving, but is talking about how it is that the just have life (eternal life) which I referred to as "salvation" as per the preceeding verse.

Another consideration here is that Old Testament passages referenced in the New Testament are not always applied with exactly the same meaning as they carried in the Old Testament. The fulness of the "salvation" referenced in Romans was not yet known in the time of Habakuk.

Great article, Ken! I was extremely blessed. Because of the importance of the statement "the just shall live by faith" a few years ago I went back to Habakkuk, where the statement originated. If you have these versions, you might be blessed to see what they have to say about this. If you don't I'll send you the statements.
- The Open Bible: New Living Translation, page 1174, beginning of Habakkuk, second paragraph about the name Habakkuk.
- Amplified Bible, page 1044 in Habakkuk, footnote at bottom.
- The Companion Bible, page 1268 at Habakkuk, footnote on "live" from verse 4. Bullinger's insight changed my thinking about "The just shall live by faith" being just about salvation.
