How to receive Answers to Prayer

In our posting, “How to Gain God’s Favor,” I showed from the Scriptures in Romans and Ephesians that those of us who have believed on our Lord Jesus Christ already have God’s favor, His good will. There are many good works we are called to perform, but these works are not what cause God to be willing to act on our behalf. He is already more than willing to act on our behalf, having surrounded us with His favor.

If this is true, then why is it that our petitions are not always granted? Were we not humble enough? Did we not ask fervently or often enough? Was our request too frivolous? Was it God’s intent to put us through some trial to teach us something or to test us? I have heard each of these reasons given, but what do the Scriptures say? There are two requirements given in God’s Word for seeing our prayers come to pass, and neither of them are any of the above.

Trust in the Lord

We as believers are always to trust absolutely in our wonderful heavenly Father. Any “Bible-believing” Christian (and should there be any other kind?) would acknowledge this in a heartbeat. In practice, however, who or what we REALLY trust in can be so subtle that even the most sincere among us might at times be outside of where we want to be.

Last year at about this time, Father asked me to do something that was a little uneasy at the time. So I made sure that it was in-fact He that was asking, and that it was in fact His direction for me. Then I asked Him to strengthen and help me, and to calm my fears. What He did for me was exactly what I needed to carry out His direction.

Two Natures? (Part One)

Are there two “natures” alive and well in each child of God, an old sin “nature” and a new Godly “nature”, each actively pulling the believer one direction or the other? E. W. Bullinger (1837-1913) thought so, though the other great “E. W.,” E. W. Kenyon (1867-1948) disagreed. (See pages 153 and following of The Father and His Family.)
