A Google search on the idiom, “the oldest trick in the book”, turned up 3,840,000 results. I am sure you have heard the expression. The number of things that have been described as “the oldest trick in the book” can never be known, but it is HUGE. OK, it is an idiom. It isn’t meant to be taken literally. But if taken literally, there could, of course, be only ONE thing that is actually the oldest trick in the book. This depends on what book, but the expression says THE book. Undoubtedly, the oldest trick in THE book is the following:
Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Actually, I thought it was referring to Satan tricking Eve. I suppose the interpretation depends on what is meant by “trick” – deception or, for lack of a better description, “magic trick”.
I’m not sure I would call creating the universe a trick. For our God, it was his normal operating procedure.
I don’t know that I would seriously call this a “trick” either, but I’m glad to see you are still checking up on us. Thank you for your participation.
